Shot from a plane banking low over the range, this is Illimani with the city stripped away entirely — glacier ridgelines catching the day’s last gold light, a thunderhead unspooling on the horizon like it’s got somewhere to be. No streets. No rooftops. Nothing to measure the mountain against except itself.

The angle almost nobody gets, and definitely not twice.

Illimani, briefly Illimani has four main summits. The highest, Nevado Illimani Sur, tops out at 6,438 metres (21,122 ft) — taller than any peak in North America outside Alaska. That thin plume of cloud on the ridge in this photo? It sits at roughly the same altitude as most commercial flights over the Rockies.
