Cable cars glide over a hillside thick with eucalyptus and brick apartment blocks, the sky overhead burning orange and grey. Illimani sits pale on the far ridge, perfectly content to share the frame with the city built in its shadow.

La Paz’s answer to a subway system, photographed next to a mountain that doesn’t need the spotlight to steal the shot anyway.

Illimani, briefly La Paz’s Mi Teleférico is the largest urban aerial cable-car network in the world — ten colour-coded lines stitched across a city too vertical for a subway. On a clear evening you can watch Illimani turn coral-pink from the yellow line somewhere over Sopocachi.
