Illimani, briefly
Illimani was first summited in 1898 by Sir Martin Conway’s British expedition,
guided by two Swiss alpinists. The mountain gave them one of the first successful
6,000-metre climbs anywhere in the Andes — and quietly held its snowcap ever
since, receding a little each decade but stubborn about it.
